Brief Biography of the Organizer:

Sebastiano Impedovo is full professor of Operating Systems and of Intelligent Systems at the University of Bari. He is member of IAPR, ACM, IEEE, IGS, ANIPLA and AICA. He has published more than 250 papers and several books in the field of handwriting recognition, document analysis, communication technologies and methodologies for e-learning, distance learning and collaborative work. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence and of the International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition.
He was chair of the Second International Workshop on “Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition” held in Bonas, France in 1991; chair of the “Seventh International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing” held in Bari, Italy in 1993; director of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition” held in Bonas, France in 1993; and chair of the tutorial “Fundamentals in Handwriting Recognition” held in Montreal in 1995. In 1996, he was chair of the “Fifth International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition” held in Colchester, UK. He was chair of the tutorial on “Handwriting Recognition” in Ulm in 1997 and of the tutorial “Handwriting Recognition: State of the Art and Future Trends”, held in Bangalore in 1999. Recently he has been chair of the tutorial “On-line and Off-line Document Recognition Systems” held in Edinburgh in August 2003. Chair of the Special Session EIE-EDUTE in WSEAS 2005 Conference held in Puerto de La Cruz Canarie.
He is a fellow of IAPR for his contributions in handwriting recognition and document analysis and for his service to IAPR.
He has been Director of the Department of Computer Science of Bari University, Chair of the Course for Degree in Computer Science, Member of the Senatus Academicus of Bari University and of the Governing board of the Scientific Park Tecnopolis-Bari. He has been Director of the Unit of CINI-Bari, director of the Post-Degree Doctorate Course in Computer Science and Member of the Scientific Committee of Tecnopolis, European Community Consultant. Currently, Impedovo is the chair of the Council of Department Directors of Bari University.
