Special Issue in: Fuzzy Systems and Applications. WSEAS
Transactions on Circuits and Systems seeks original manuscripts for a Special
Issue in Fuzzy Systems and Applications
Fuzzy systems is an alternative to traditional notions of set membership and
logic that has its origins in ancient Greek philosophy, and applications at the
leading edge of Artificial Intelligence. Yet, despite its long-standing origins,
it is a relatively new field, and as such leaves much room for development. This
paper will present the foundations of fuzzy systems, along with some of the more
noteworthy objections to its use, with examples drawn from current research in
the field of Artificial Intelligence. Ultimately, it will be demonstrated that
the use of fuzzy systems makes a viable addition to the field of Artificial
Intelligence, and perhaps more generally to formal mathematics as a whole. Fuzzy
systems have demonstrated the ability to formalize in a computationally
efficient manner the approximate reasoning capability typical of humans. One of
the important research challenges today is to further develop the fuzzy systems
theory towards the design of intelligent systems with a higher level of
flexibility and autonomy, so that the systems can evolve their structure and
knowledge depending on the environment and ultimately - evolve their
intelligence. To address the problems of modelling, control, prediction,
classification and data processing in a dynamically changing and evolving
environment, a system must be able to fully adapt its structure and adjust its
parameters, rather than use a pre-trained and a fixed structure. That is, the
system must be able to evolve, to self-develop, to self-organize, to self-evaluate
and to self-improve.

B) Special Issue in: Neural
Networks and Applications. WSEAS
Transactions on Circuits and Systems seeks original manuscripts for a Special
Issue in Neural Networks and Applications.
The aim of the special issue
is to promote further international co-operation among Scientists and Engineers
from different disciplines involved in the study of
Neural
Networks and Applications. Artificial neural networks are composed of
interconnecting artificial neurons (programming constructs that mimic the
properties of biological neurons). Artificial neural networks may either be used
to gain an understanding of biological neural networks, or for solving
artificial intelligence problems without necessarily creating a model of a real
biological system. The real, biological nervous system is highly complex:
artificial neural network algorithms attempt to abstract this complexity and
focus on what may hypothetically matter most from an information processing
point of view. Good performance (e.g. as measured by good predictive ability,
low generalization error), or performance mimicking animal or human error
patterns, can then be used as one source of evidence towards supporting the
hypothesis that the abstraction really captured something important from the
point of view of information processing in the brain. Another incentive for
these abstractions is to reduce the amount of computation required to simulate
artificial neural networks, so as to allow one to experiment with larger
networks and train them on larger data sets.
